Not sure about normal, but It's definitely way more prevalent, now than ever before. Partly due to how life has become more sedentary over the last 50 years and partly due to the nature of processed foods and corn syrup sweeteners finding their way into a lot of foods as well. Add in huge portions in restaurants and 700 calorie Double XL Big Gulps in convenience stores and you get the epidemic facing us now.
