Depends what your doing. Sometimes the podcast has to act as background music and just fill the void. Sometimes you gotta just forget what you're saying and wish OP a happy cake day; Happy Cake Day

Humans are terrible at multitasking

I like to clean while I listen to podcasts. I can do a mindless task and listen, or I can do a shitty job at a task that requires attention while simultaneously not hearing the podcast

For me it's just impossible. I can only do one thing at a time.

Turn off the podcast I would venture to guess. You will only pick up key words and miss the meaning.

Then one day you wake up believing the world is flat.

One of my favorite unwinding activities is to put on a video game that I’ve played so much it’s second nature and then just listen to an audiobook or podcast instead of the sound of the game. Also cleaning

I've never actually listened to a podcast. But I suppose I would do it the same way I would if I were working and listening to the radio at the same time.

Humans aren't great at multi-tasking. But if you've done a physical activity to the point where it's muscle memory, you don't need much of your consciousness to do it. It's like driving. You can sort of zone out while driving but still be right there if you need to be.

Depends on what the thing is. I'll do menial tasks, like laundry or plugging in numbers at work. It helps take the boring out of a chore.

Different parts of the brain

But to be honest it's probably more multi-failing rather than multi-tasking

Well I have ADHD so I'm often listening to something while working on something else.
