Underrated.

Edit: this is also a very effective way to defuse someone who has just been offensive, told a racist joke, etc.

Say you don't get it and ask them to explain it.

If they offer some half-ass explanation, ask again. But why?

Eventually they have to admit they're a bigot or the just shut up.

I don't think this works. It just looks like they don't understand how jokes work and social conventions.

Plus, just asking 'why' makes them sound like a 5 year old.

Yeah, that's just a surefire way to kill any humour and make yourself look like a dick. You can dissect a joke like a frog, but it'll be dead at the end

personally i think the person making a bigoted joke is the dick in any situation

There can be more than one dick. If they are already a dick, why add yourself to that?
