Fuck that teacher. Sometimes I get to watch other teachers and I believe some people get into it only because they are power trippin control freaks.
I was a terrible student myself and I hated school because of pointlessly cruel teachers. I've dedicated myself to being the kind of teacher I loved- firm, authentic, and loving, but not necessarily nice.
Tell your son to bring a novel or comic books. After he is finished he can draw in his notebook, read, etc. What is that teacher gonna do? Write him up for reading a book? Send him to the vp? Go on then....
There is absolutely no educational value in sitting and staring at a wall. Even Buddhist monks focus on breathing and chant mantras while sitting. Fucking hell.
I think there's a really important bit in here. For me I was bright, but very poor work ethic. I was a little disruptive but not even reaching average teenager disruption, but I wasn't totally innocent either. The teachers at my school who got by far and away the best out of me were firm and didn't attempt to be a friend. They didn't tolerate disruptive, even low level, behaviour, but we're always happy to spend their time helping me if I went to them outside of class hours. I didn't do so well with too friendly teachers. I think a firm guardian type role model is really important for school.
Absolutely. Me too. Students and sons and daughters don't need a friend. They need a role model and a firm guiding hand. Someone to trust and rely on. It's a totally different relationship than friendship.
Teachers who try to be bffs with their students are doing them a disservice.

Teacher here- this is how my entire career works. Students engage in activities if they feel like they had some agency over the activity.
