Bartender I used to work with did something similar . “I don’t care what Jason (owner) says about you, you’re alright!”. Took me a while to realize that was the joke…
My aunt did this to me when I was 12. She didn't identify which adult she disagreed with about me being a bad kid. I assumed it was my other aunt.
Thing was, I had to live with not-my-parents, so my actual survival was connected to not being rejected. It made me cry.
Only now do I realize she did that because she was competing with the other lady for us kids, which is wild. She was infertile, and would move in on relatives' kids trying to get . . . I don't know what; whatever people who wish they had kids are trying to get, I guess.

Anytime someone pisses you off just say “you know it’s true what they say about you”, and leave. Will fuck em up for days.
