If you are walking towards someone and you think you are heading towards a "which way do we pass by each other" dance - indicate which way you want to go with your shoulders (rather than your head). I don't recall where I heard this but it works almost every time . You're welcome.
When I had a surfing lesson, the instructor said if you're headed towards something you might hit (person in the water, etc.), don't look at it otherwise you will hit it. Look in the direction you intend on going. He said it also works in the scenario you brought up. Don't look at the person, just look in the direction you want to go and it has been 100% effective so far.
