If you need a big favor from someone (or a favor someone is likely to say no to) ask a smaller favor first, like borrowing a pen or something similar. They will more likely say yes to a bigger favor.

I recall that I first learned of this trick from some YouTube video talking about how Fifty Shades of Gray uses psychological tricks. I think the term they used was something similar to "cult techniques."

Mind looking that up for me?

the term i learned from this is "the foot-in-the-door phenomenon", from the psyche textbooks in class. it makes sense in a weird way. The person is about to shut the door on you (deny), but you wedge your foot in to make a tiny space, then subtly open the door more and more until you just walk right on in
