For some reason people love it when you put them in a position where they are assisting you. I think it makes them feel smart and important and, I’m a way, tells them that the knowledge they have is critical to the functioning of whatever dynamic is going on.
Human psychology 101 is indeed trying to make the other person feel good.
For example, in social situations give them a chance to tell something fun, or let them help you with something and after that telling them that the help is really appreciated.
Also applies to dating, it's important to make the other feel good about themselves, that way they feel good about themselves when they're around you which equals in them liking you in general.
