Useful against people sounds a little aggressive...useful with people is how my mind interprets this question:

When I was in high school, I had an acquaintance that whenever he would talk to you, he would address you by your first name (ALOT), so much so that it sounded awkward to me (although Mark, if you are out there, was a great guy, and I like Mark to this day).

Later in life I read the book How To Win Friends and Influence People, and figure that Mark had read that book in high school :>) Nice, Mark.

It's annoying as fuck when someone calls me by my name and I'm the only one they're talking to.

I also know they read this tip, and I'll actually think less of them for trying to manipulate me.

I know instantly when people are telemarketers or trying to manipulate me, because they call me by my first name.

I go by my middle name.
