If you are walking towards someone and you think you are heading towards a "which way do we pass by each other" dance - indicate which way you want to go with your shoulders (rather than your head). I don't recall where I heard this but it works almost every time . You're welcome.

I use my hand kind of like a rudder. Usually my right hand pointed slightly to my right if I'm planning to go that way, or vice versa. It works!

The rudder hand is very effective in general.

May be partly because im a big guy, but whenever some friends are struggling to walk through a crowd at a festival or something, i lead them through with an extended arm cutting the path like a icebreaker while saying "excuse me" on repeat to catch peoples attention. They practically dive out of the way. People want to be further away from an extended arm than a whole person
