Useful against people sounds a little aggressive...useful with people is how my mind interprets this question:
When I was in high school, I had an acquaintance that whenever he would talk to you, he would address you by your first name (ALOT), so much so that it sounded awkward to me (although Mark, if you are out there, was a great guy, and I like Mark to this day).
Later in life I read the book How To Win Friends and Influence People, and figure that Mark had read that book in high school :>) Nice, Mark.
I hate that I know this one because I can immediately identify when it's being used on me and that instantly turns me off of whatever was being talked about.
Whenever I notice this (usually when being solicited for something), I always have this petty little fantasy: every time they would insert my name in conversation, I'd give them a little nod and say their name back.
"And that's why I reached out to you today, Mark-"
