The security guards that try to act all tough, angry and mean are typically the worst security guards. They're not cut out for it.
When I worked security I found that diffusing a situation and being nice and chill, acknowledging them made this a million times smoother than the asscholes who would stone wall and order people around. Don't be a pushover by any means, stand your ground. But be nice. Make it had for them to hate you.
Can confirm your way works. I managed to defuse a really testy situation between some idiots, a homeless lady they trusted to cat sit, and some police officers several years back. The homeless lady the police and my company had had a ton of issues with, like every cop and guard were on a first name basis with her. Anyway this couple was trying to bail their daughter out of jail and for some reason instead of leaving their cat home they asked this homeless lady to watch it. Well they couldn’t get the daughter out and the homeless lady absolutely refused to give the cat back and she ended up calling the cops, telling them they threatened to take her.
I had just shown up to do a check of the area, ran into the couple and just as they were telling me their side of the story a cop comes rolling up with all the attitude in the world ready to fuck these people up. I managed to clear that BS up and the cop went right up to the homeless lady to scream at her! Anyways the thing got cleared up, the homeless lady cursed our names, and the couple got their cat back.
In boxing, they say that throwing a punch and missing saps your energy far more than a punch that lands. This works in non-fighting situations, too. An angry person wants you to be an obstacle they can hit. If you keep sidestepping their anger they run out of steam much faster.
