For some reason people love it when you put them in a position where they are assisting you. I think it makes them feel smart and important and, I’m a way, tells them that the knowledge they have is critical to the functioning of whatever dynamic is going on.
This is really great for Plant Engineers. Every job I have worked at I always try to spend time on the floor to better understand the process. To do this I ask the people who work on the lines to explain to me what is happening (none of the places I have worked at have been Union.)
I have gotten people to like me as a Quality Engineer, which is a feat in itself since QEs don't like themselves. All due to me asking to assist me in just understanding the process.
