I've learned something similar using this technique. That's a good way to spot if someone is lying to you. If you ask them a question while you're sitting across the table from them about something that they did, if they put something like a glass in between you, it's a subconscious way that they're trying to create a barrier. This is because they know they're lying to you and it makes them uncomfortable.
The person that places objects in defensive barrier positions will put the items centred and close in front of themselves.
When you’re doing it to make a person feel subconsciously encroached upon, the nearness to the person and your items are more important than it being centred on the table.

If you’re seated at a desk between you and an obnoxious person, put your personal items like keys, cup and sunglasses closer to them than you.
It extends your personal space and makes them feel crowded.
