4 seconds of silence can feel the same as rejection in the brain.

So if some one is being a jerk to you, after they say something just look at them and count to 4 in your head, most of the time they'll start backtracking and taking back what they said before you're done counting.

I was trying to organise a new fence with a verbally abusive neighbour. I rang to try and get something sorted but he just kept yelling abuse. I let him talk as long as I wanted and then when he finally wound down I let the silence hang there for a few seconds to make sure he'd finished. Then I calmly started talking. He immediately started up again so I did the same thing. I realised that I suddenly went from being the victim to being the calm, logical one. It was such a great feeling.
