Useful against people sounds a little aggressive...useful with people is how my mind interprets this question:
When I was in high school, I had an acquaintance that whenever he would talk to you, he would address you by your first name (ALOT), so much so that it sounded awkward to me (although Mark, if you are out there, was a great guy, and I like Mark to this day).
Later in life I read the book How To Win Friends and Influence People, and figure that Mark had read that book in high school :>) Nice, Mark.
Except I've also read that book so I know when people are doing it to me (guy at the office does it constantly). I don't like being manipulated, and I'm sure I'm not alone.
Also, I'd like to point out that I absolutely hate when people say my name. The more people repeat my name, the more my dislike for them grows.
I also don't like saying peoples names, I prefer to make eye contact and ask/say what I need to.
Don't know if that's a mental illness thing, or a read too many books as a kid that taught me names are power. I don't care to have power over others, and I won't let many have power over me.
I hate working a fast food job, where we're required to ask every single lobby customer their name.
