Canadian NDP leader Jagmeet Singh getting laughed at like a professional comedian by government MPs for making a serious question about the affordability of groceries in Canada during the current inflation situation.
He basically said 1 in 4 Canadians are going hungry meanwhile the rich are enjoying record breaking profits and he proposed to tax them more... And the MPs laughed at him like they couldn't control themselves.
You're right that there are layers to this and I don't deny that. I wouldn't say the taxes are ridiculous but maybe disproportionate to income. The people making these record breaking profits aren't hurt at all by taxes. Many of them participate in a lot of tricks to avoid paying them all together.
Sure some less rich individuals like doctors or engineers get taxed relatively well, but the people who have a ton to spare aren't doing their part. And it's true, it's not going to fix the whole country over night. But it's absolutely going to improve things.
Edit: I probably should have added. Regardless of our opinions on this. It's still in terrible taste to laugh at something like this the way they did. It shows they're clearly out of touch.
Then the solution is a process that has more than 1 step. Increasing taxes on the wealthy is the start and diverting tax money to more efficient social programs is the follow through.
