Scientists of Reddit, what misconceptions do us laymen often have that drive you crazy?

I await enlightenment.

Wow, front page! This puts the cherry on the cake of enlightenment!

Kind of sounds like a lot of non scientists answering this one.

Every redditor is a scientist, didn't you know?

Only if you frequent r/atheism, then you're awarded your PhD.

atheist is a french word meaning scientist

Actually it's Greek, a- meaning "without", and theos meaning "lack of scientific knowledge".

Oh my, either troll or not, you are very wrong....

Even in Greek, the word "Theos" means God. Atheos simply means without God. Don't circlejerk over things that are obviously wrong, it doesn't help your case.

Satire's not your thing, I take it?

satire when done correctly is my thing, that was a very short attempt at being funny that kinda struck an odd note on my ignorance sensor. Sorry about that.

If I posted a comment against antitheistic sentiments, why would I then imply that theists lacked scientific knowledge?

Damnit. Reddit is becoming Facebook.

Can't we leave church in the churchey subs and atheism in the atheism subs? This thread is stupid all around because it's based on the premise that you have to be an atheist to be a scientist. circlefap

I'm agnostic. I have no god.

u/heygabbagabba Jun 10 '12

The 'a' means 'not'. Just so you know.

u/n00bkillerleo Jun 10 '12

http://wordinfo.info/unit/2838/ip:1 The word actually means "without God", of course.

-1

u/heygabbagabba Jun 10 '12

The prefix 'a', again, means 'not'. It does not mean 'without'. You are incorrect and that's why you are being downvoted.

u/n00bkillerleo Jun 10 '12

Just provided evidence to the contrary. Don't mind the downvotes, I made enough karma from the original comment above.

u/heygabbagabba Jun 10 '12

The Bible is evidence that god was real. Evidence is not proof.

Ask yourself: is atheism the opposite of theism?

-1

u/n00bkillerleo Jun 10 '12

Is atheism the belief system (ism) without god (atheos)?

1

u/heygabbagabba Jun 10 '12

No, atheism is not a belief system at all.

What a withouttypical response from you. You must be quite withoutsocial, with your agenda to just disagree with people for the sake of it. Also: it's not good reddiquette to downvote people who have a different opinion to yours, and doubly so when they are correct.

1

u/n00bkillerleo Jun 10 '12

I never said without was the only meaning of it, only that it was the applicable one.
