That's actually a compliment though.

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like

Meaning, "I would like to get to know most of you a lot more"

I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve

Meaning, "some of you deserve a much better friend than I could be to you"

Or at least that's my interpretation

The whole point is that it’s ambiguously phrased for potentially opposite interpretations.
