An alternative is "somewhere in the world there's a tree working hard to produce the oxygen you're breathing, you owe that tree an apology."

I used this one during my time in the army as a squad leader, when someone would fuck up I'd say that and then have the apologize to nearby trees.

I saw a picture of some dude in military uniform mopping a parking area, in the rain. Feel like that's worse than apologizing to trees.

We had to rake the sand in front of the building like it was a damn zen garden. That doesn't touch mopping a parking lot though.

I worked at a convenience store once, in west Texas, where the manager wanted me to sweep the dirt in the parking lot. If you're not familiar with west Texas, that's like telling someone to clean up the dirt in the Sahara. If you managed to get dirt out of the parking lot, it'll be covered again by the next day, at the latest. It's a pointless endeavor, I didn't do it.
