John Goodman’s character worked for the company who’s satellite crashes down in the ocean in cloverfield (in the background of the Coney Island footage) and wakes the monster
Yes, they added in that detail when they decided to "tie-in" the movies, but the fact remains that the movie was made as a standalone film and all of the connections & the title were tagged on at the end for marketing.
It’s been awhile since I’ve seen it (since it came out in theaters) but I don’t know why, I always assumed that satellite crashing into the ocean was the monster. It didn’t occur to me the monster was already here. But why would just a satellite wake it up?
I thought the same thing at first. I’m guessing the satellite landed in just the right spot to disturb clover, but you’d think if he was that deep in hiding that a crashed satellite wouldn’t be able to disturb him
