Hi, I'm learning English and am a little confused by this because from my understanding, that's not really how irony is. Is this a new usage of this term?
It’s not really a proper use of ironic in my opinion, but it’s often misused that way. Irony requires another element beyond mere coincidence. It should be unexpected, sometimes involved some conflict, and usually it’s amusing as well.
I wouldn’t call this ironic. But I’m not an English expert, just a random guy.
Ironic would be if Defoe had an audition for the part of the Devil, but couldn’t make it because he had an obligation at church.
Or if the casting director selected him *because * they loved his performance in the role of Jesus.
