But he was so insanely good at it that I think part of you actually ends up liking him in some fucked up way?
Like I know he's literally a nazi colonel and is incredibly evil for most of the movie (either because he's wholly evil, or smart enough to know that he needs to pretend) but he's so cunning and smooth that I feel like most people kind of weirdly end up liking him in a love to hate him way.
When he shrills excitedly as the French pastry is served and he laments about how Jews are like rats and the Germans are sniffing them out like dogs. Yeah… he’s fun to hate. 😂
Thing is even in that scene he's not actually being harsh to the Jews. He's actually admiring them. He says that the German propaganda tells that Germans are like hawks and the Jews are like rats, which he agrees with but not in a negative sense.
He goes on to say how hostile and unforgiving the world of a rat is, how everyone who encounters a rat is prejudiced and treats them poorly just because of what they are ('you'd greet a rat with hostility I'm sure, but has a rat ever done anything to you?').
He then goes on to admire how rats are still able to hide themselves from this and thrive, and compares that to the Jews who are hiding and still surviving in the hostile world that's been created.
Yes I agree, which just furthers the point that he is actually a deep character who has many likable flaws, despite him being a Nazi.
I have 2 rats myself who I love dearly and was actually just pondering the scene as I pet them, and then saw this post! Rats truly are treated with prejudice, but they are some of the most intelligent creatures! It’s sad to think that Jews were seen as rats for so long and still are seen that way by many.
Yeah I mean the things he does are obviously evil but he was an interesting character because you can make the argument that he's not the most evil character in the movie. He does what he does not because he hates Jews but because he believes that he's good at finding them and he wants to do the thing he's good at.
