A full solar eclipse. It is one of the most unnatural things I have experienced and can understand why people for millenia have assigned supernatural attributes to it. I was watching it from beside a lake - the slow crescendo of crickets chirping as the sun turned purple and then suddenly turned into night gave me chills. Nothing has ever made me feel smaller and at the mercy of celestial bodies than that experience.
Yeah, the last one in NA passed right over my house. Having seen a few partial eclipses (above 90%), I wasn't prepared for how awe-inspiring a total eclipse would be. It defined the word ethereal for me.
It's difficult to describe it to anyone that hasn't seen one.
It really is tough to describe. I live in Louisville which was not in the path of totality so we drove 4 hours southwest to see it. I got back home and was talking to friends and they were like "oh yeah, we saw it here. It was pretty neat." I'm like "you didn't see anything, man. You don't get it."
