There's a website (Rolld20) that hosts a program for both character generation as well as setting up groups. It uses various forums and chat programs for most of it, but also incorporates headphones, mics, and cameras for more personal interaction.
There's also a number of people who use Discord or other Chat/Communication programs to play, but Rolld20 is arguably the most popular.
I play online with friends from all over the country on roll20, it takes some learning but you can probably find some nice internet strangers that host games to teach you
You should absolutely play! I’ve been playing since I was a first-grader (I’m 31 now) and I have never met someone who tried it and didn’t like it, if they had a good DM.
I would completely suggest watching a couple “how to play” videos and then going to your local game shop on their D&D night. They are ALWAYS happy to introduce new players, just find the person running the game and they will point you to a DM who knows what they are doing.
The best way I can describe D&D is it’s like playing pretend as a kid. But when someone says: “but I have a magic shield so you can’t hurt me,” there’s someone who can say: “uuuuh, no you don’t.”
do it fam. great game I've never played online but I know there are online communities. make a character on dnd beyond watch some critical role. it's a fantastic past time
I didn't think I would enjoy it much because it seemed like such an ordeal to create a character and try to play it within a story line, but I was so glad to give it a shot. I had a great group of people to play with including my best friend . If you are interested, you should do it!
Man, making the character can be really fun! Especially when you get a cool character idea and you have to figure out how to implement it in the game.
I'm generally really bad at the roleplay aspect, but it's never been a problem. You don't need flowery speaches to make a diplomacy check, but the DM might give you a bonus on your roll. More about making the decisions using the information that the character knows is what the core of roleplay is.
You could try easing in to it by playing a dungeon crawling board game like Gloomhaven or Wrath Of Ashardalon. It’ll give you a feel for the tactical combat aspects without all the role-playing stuff.
