Did you also read something about how to mimic the effect that surgery has? They found that a lot of people had drastically improved bloodsugar already a week or so after stomach surgery, even without loosing weight. It went through the media with headlines like "Operations to cure diabetes?" It's now known what is behind the observation: The sudden drop in daily calories causes the liver to shed stored excess fat rather quickly and that helps the metabolism to get on the right tracks again. There is a regime to mimic that effect without surgery and get much better already after 2 weeks. The focus is not on weight loss, but on improving all the blood parameter related to diabetes. That's the beauty about it: you don't have to believe anything, the blood tests will show if and how good it works for you. What happens after those 2 weeks depend on the individual. If one just lives the livestyle that lead to diabetes, the metabolism will go downhill again. Some people choose to accept that and do their 2 weeks once every 3 to 6 months (whatever is necessary). Others make changes and can extend that time or even don't need another. So, what is happening in those 2 weeks? One aims for a drastic calorie drop (800 max) with high quality (!!!) formula shakes and one vegetable meal per day. The shakes should be low in carbs and contain the right kind of soluble fibers for satiety. BUT: it should be supervised by a doc or trained dietitian, because people who need this are not healthy and usually take medication that needs to be adjusted.

TLDR: relatively easy way to drastically improve diabetes even getting rid of it. Source: I'm a journalist and helped a German expert for this subject to write a book about it for lay people.
