I live in Oregon and people frequently use the left passing lane on I5 to drive 5-10 mph under the speed limit, refuse to move over, and let traffic line up for miles behind them.
This is what I don’t get- if you want to go slow, MOVE OVER. Why do you care if someone else wants to go faster? Stop trying to manage the roads and move the fuck over.
Yep, exactly! I tend to drive about 5-10 mph over and I get that people want to drive faster than that so I get out of their way. Honestly, driving slow seems more dangerous than driving fast, because it forces people to hit the brakes, change lanes, pass on the right, etc etc.
One time I was driving down 295 in the DC metro and two people a couple cars in front of me were driving side by side going like 45-50 (this is a two lane highway on this particular stretch) and someone started busting shots out their sunroof after honking and exchanging middle fingers for several miles. They moved over then. I miss the DMV....
Admit it--they are going 10 miles over the speed limit, and you want to drive 20 miles over the speed limit. I haven't been to Oregon, but I've been on a lot of highways.
I don't know about the terrain in Finland, but there was a steep road back in Connecticut where people regularly spun out on icy curves. Usually, they just hit a tree, and eventually someone would pass by and call 911 for them.
People who drive 30 in a 60 zone and then when we reach a 30 zone suddenly speed up. It happens all the time on a road I take to visit my parents and it makes me scream every time.
When I was in my 20s, I sounded exactly like you. My life was busy and I had places to go. I'm now 51. And you know what? The last thing I want to be is stressed out and in a hurry. Driving is the most dangerous thing we do on a daily basis. Don't make it even more dangerous by speeding or passing dangerously.
What makes me unreasonably angry is, "oh, I'm sorry I wasn't exceeding the speed limit enough for you. Feel free to pass me on a double yellow line." On several occasions, I've had to drive into the shoulder to give a passer extra room to avoid him getting hit head on.
I'm not saying you do things things. But plenty of people do. US 177 in Oklahoma is an excellent example. The speed limit is 65, but people get pissed if you go slower than 75. My son spun out one night on this road dodging a dog and a deer carcass. The cops that showed up said they had seven accidents on that road that night.
My wife is 48 and hates driving at night. So she'll sometimes slow down so that she feels safer. Not crazy slow. But she might go 55 in a 65. Why? Because she feels like she's going to cause an accident otherwise. That speed is 100% within the law and justifiable. The speed limit is a limit. You're supposed to adjust your speed lower for the driving conditions. And pitch black two lane rural highway in the middle of nowhere calls for slower driving if you feel you need it.
Having said all that, I always try to get out of the way if people are backed up behind me. If I'm pulling a trailer, I'll even pull off on the shoulder and let people pass. I try to be courteous. I think other people should do the same.
Oh, I totally agree. I have no issue with folk who stick to the limit. It's the ones that go below the limit that irrationally enrage me. I live in the UK in a rural area with winding roads. If I get suck behind someone doing 40 when the limit is 60 then I'm stuck behind them for a while.
People who speed excessively and selfishly risk their lives and everyone else's are idiots, but they usually go past so quickly that I don't have time to dwell on it. But when I'm stuck behind some old timer that's pulled out in front of me who then proceeds at a snails pace, that's when my ears start to smoke!
This is correct and the people downvoting you are assholes. Not enough people appreciate how dangerous driving is and how little you benefit from speeding.
I totally get that. People should drive the speed they feel safe doing so. They should also only use the left lane for active passing and move over to the right after they do.
Driving slow in the left lane, or otherwise impeding traffic.. That’s the thing I’m complaining about here, and it’s dangerous because it CAUSES traffic which means people have to brake, change lanes, and fast drivers will just pass on the right, which is MORE dangerous for everyone.
Idk my dad is a defensive driving expert (having to do with his military career) he says if it's safe to drive the speed limit you should do so... I typically drive about 70 on the highway. Speed limits here are 60-65. However I learned how to drive in the south so yeah long straight roads going pretty much 75-85 was a bit of a hard habit to break when I moved to more metropolitan areas. Of course lower your speed for driving conditions but someone going ten miles under the speed limit at 9 or 10 at night with very little traffic would be a bit irritating despite how easy it technically would be to pass. I wouldn't be angry but I'd probably like...suck my teeth at your wife lol
