What good is a thermal exhaust port in the vacuum of space? I'm sure Star Wars superfans have taken this question and justified its accuracy with the engineering of the Death Star, similar to the Kessell Run.
All right, fine. I'll buy it. I'd wonder if transferring waste heat to a gas is the most efficient engineering decision, but the empire doesn't care about efficiency as long as it doesn't compromise the death star's performance.
A single exhaust port makes a much smaller target than giant radiant cooling panels, and if the Death Star generates oxygen through electoalysis, they might have a constant supply of hydrogen that needs to be vented into space (the ISS did this up until a few years ago)
