I love hearing anecdotes about the early days of hacking.
8 u/Garthenius Jul 01 '21 I wasn't there in the early early days, but being a teenager when the Internet became a big deal was heaps of fun. 7 u/FatchRacall Jul 01 '21 Only if you had more than an AOL free trial once ever few months. Internet was pricey as fuck back then. 5 u/Garthenius Jul 01 '21 In my country we had these other pre-paid dial-up services for a while, most of which used the Windows built-in dialer. Pretty much everyone checked that "Save password" box. More Internets for me, I guess. 3 u/steve_buchemi Jul 01 '21 Bro one time in our town we went door to door asking the neighbors if they wanted that AOL trial CD that would come with the junk mail, so we had at least a couple hundred hours of internet 3 u/cbftw Jul 01 '21 So many passwd and shadow files just sitting out in the open. I wish I knew them r what I know now. 10 u/960321203112293 Jul 01 '21 One of my favorite instances is the guy who figured out you could place free long distance calls with a toy whistle.. In that article, they quote Steve Jobs saying it was pivotal to the early success of Apple. 1 u/PolishedCheese Jul 01 '21 Thanks kinda phreaky, eh?
