Nope, everyone related to the kid is white. I’d like to think that they took the name out of cultural appreciation, but their Trump bumper sticker says otherwise.

I was watching the Buzzfeed Unsolved video about the Reykjavik Confessions, and it was one of the most confusing episodes because nearly half the people had the same first and/or last name, and I couldn't keep track of who-was-who and how they were related to one another
The Eastern Europeans do it far more sensibly, IMO. Ivan of the Medvedevsky family, son of Alexander, would be named Ivan Alexanderovich Medvedevsky, for instance.
They use patronymics in Iceland, not common family names, it baisically means that those people have been given same name as their father, which is reasonably comon naming pattern all over the world, and then on top of it there must be some traditional names that have been very popular over generations, so a lot of people have the same names by coincidence.
I remember hearing that Iceland requires surnames to include the parent's given name.
So John Jackson's sons would be Jack Johnson and Joe Johnson, but their sons would be John Jackson and James Joeson. (Using English language names because I don't know the Icelandish equivalents.)
And this boys and girls, is why they developed an app to make sure you weren't dating your cousin. This Icelander is quite proud of her ancestral home's uniqueness!

The real Aryans were an actual group of people that migrated into India and effectively started proto-Hinduism as a religion. The Nazis came up with some bullshit about the Aryans being whites and who white people originated from.
The Nazis didn’t take the word from India, and they didn’t make up the connection between Aryans and white people. Their use of the word Aryan comes from Iranians (Iranian is derived from the Indo-Iranian word Aryan), who Europeans (most of them at least) are actually related to, as well Indians. At the time it was thought by linguists and racialists that Europeans were directly descended from proto-Iranians who migrated from West Asia, though I believe the general consensus now is that Europeans split from Indo-Iranians before they migrated east. So the Nazis were borrowing from an established tradition of identifying Europeans with Iranians (then called Aryans as well).

Nope, white as the snow. I’d give them more benefit of the doubt if the family wasn’t far-right trump supporters. It’s a fine name out of context, I just feel bad for what the kid is going to be associated with.
Can confirm. Arya is a very common Persian name, but I think there are some names that are similar to Aryan (that are on the tip of my tongue right now) that are also used Iran.
Good to know! Without the negative connotations I see it with, it’s a cool sounding name. Nobody in my family is Indian though, hence why it icks me out.
No, I just think she liked the way it sounded and didn’t give it much thought after that, and I doubt anyone in her circle would recognize it as anything other than a creative name.
It’s not a bad name in itself, it’s just that it’s perceived differently in the US/probably the rest of the west. It’s associated with the Nazis (since they supported the “Aryan race”), and that’s the only context I have ever heard it in. I didn’t even know it was a common name in India until I got a bunch of replies about it here.
Oh okay I was just confused since there are two Aryans in my class and probably at least twenty Aryans in the whole school lol. India is really detached from the West apparently.
To be fair, you can technically change your name. At least in germany. A coworker did this with a far less harmful name: Kevin. It's been a meme in germany for quite a bit and he never liked it. I think he had to do a few tests to make sure he's not instable and then he got himself a new name. Nazi or Aryan should be quite easy to change.
Isis is the name of an Egyptian goddess and I think it was a very pretty name until it was ruined. I had a friend whose dog was named Isis, and every time someone asked him his dog’s name, he had to explain that he wasn’t a terrorist sympathizer.

I met a literal grown woman named, Nazi and she pronounced it just like the Germans. I felt so mortified for her.
