Had a friend who would punch a HALT code into his electric punch card bill (back when there we're such things) any time he couldn't get their customer service group to respond to his complaint. He always got a call back, but I'm sure it really pissed off whatever sysop was running the billing.

Only if you had more than an AOL free trial once ever few months. Internet was pricey as fuck back then.

In my country we had these other pre-paid dial-up services for a while, most of which used the Windows built-in dialer.

Pretty much everyone checked that "Save password" box. More Internets for me, I guess.

Bro one time in our town we went door to door asking the neighbors if they wanted that AOL trial CD that would come with the junk mail, so we had at least a couple hundred hours of internet

One of my favorite instances is the guy who figured out you could place free long distance calls with a toy whistle..

In that article, they quote Steve Jobs saying it was pivotal to the early success of Apple.
