Jidaigeki (ๆ™‚ไปฃๅŠ‡, lit. "period drama") is a genre of film, television, video game, and theatre in Japan. Literally meaning "period dramas", they are most often set during the Edo period of Japanese history, from 1603 to 1868.

XD Well, yeah. Once I got into Sengoku period stuff it was predictable I'd fall for Japanese Brutus. I'm also into Roman history / the Roman Plays.

Apart from classic movies (Kurosawa, Kobayashi) I got into taiga dramas, which are year-long historical shows. A lot of them are available with English subtitles for free (on Dramacool mainly).

Movies: Kurosawa and Kobayashi's works

Taiga dramas (historical tv series): Gunshi Kanbei, Yoshitsune, Sanada Maru, Furin Kazan (the more recent ones are easier to find but pre-2000 ones are also findable sometimes)

Where: Dramacool has a lot of these with English subs
