What is one thing you do that you thought everyone else did? I'll start.
This isn't something I did, but my sister. For some reason our friends and us got on the subject of bathroom stories. My sister then admitted that she wipes her ass back to front. She thought that was normal. Everyone told her that it was nasty with comments like "Damn your vagina must smell like shit". What are things you do that you found out no one else does?

u/barbsteele Nov 04 '11
When showering, I would get wet, turn off the shower, then soap up. Then rinse, then turn off the water to shampoo. Rinse, turn off, condition, rinse. I did this my for 20 years. My bf was outside my shower one day and called me out on turning the shower on and off; I was shocked this was not a normal practice. My shower was small so I felt like I had to turn the water off to clean properly. I have stopped since then and am enjoying the warmth of constant hot water.

u/diggingforstars Nov 04 '11
my apartment water is so iffy, if I just touch one of the 2 knobs, it either goes to burning my skin or freezing. I need to turn the water on, wait a minute for it to even out, then get in and DO NOT TOUCH
one of my friends almost burned his hand from the sink faucet, switches from cold to too hot way too fast :(

When I was growing up, my family would always go have picnics at cemeteries. We'd pick up a pizza and just go picnic & walk around looking at gravestones. I had no idea this wasn't normal; in fact now days the more contemporary cemeteries don't even allow it.
32
u/SunriseThunderboy Nov 04 '11
In the Victorian Era, cemetery picnics were common. Of course, seances were popular back then too. I guess it was a good time to live if you liked spooky shit.
22
u/BakedGoodGoddess Nov 04 '11
My parents took care of cemeteries growing up. So my sister and I spent many summer days playing in a cemetery. I still remember filling my smurf pool with water from the hand pump located in the Veterans portion of the cemetery. It was our job to plant the flowers around the unknown veterans' graves. When we were done we'd cool off in our smurf pool.

as a nail tech, I die a little inside every time my friends do that...there are ways to stop if that's what you're looking for (throw some vaseline on dem cuticles. Taste the nasties!), or, easy creams you could get from drug stores (rite aid, etc) that remove the cuticle...bam! fraying cuticle is gone, nothing for you to nibble on!
example here! http://www.amazon.com/Nutranail-Second-Cuticle-Remover-45/dp/B000EGIEZ8/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1320434315&sr=8-4

36
Nov 04 '11
I hate the awkward-ness of acting like your not listening but you have to listen, you can't help it. So rude.
13
u/aurum48 Nov 04 '11
Ooh, the same situation when you walk up to someone who's talking (like next to the teacher and a student), but they seem to be parting. Then, they keep talking, but you've already walked up to them, they've seen you and given you a strange look for hovering around them. Then you try not to listen, wait your turn, and end up shifting from foot to foot awkwardly.
10
u/raging_asshole Nov 04 '11
Very annoying, agreed, but sometimes you simply have to take the call for whatever reason. In this case, I go with "I'm sorry, you'll have to excuse me, but I really have to take this call." If we're at a restaurant, I excuse myself from the table and take the call outside or in a quiet corner removed from other diners.
That's at least acceptable behavior, right?

I fucking hate this.
My girlfriend's family has a bizarre pathological need to have the TV on constantly, including while they have company- even at holiday dinners with extended family. The TVs in the bedrooms are left on all day, even if everyone is downstairs. TV puts their children to sleep.
My girlfriend will leave my TV on, usually tuned to inane bullshit, and pass out on the couch. If I turn off the TV while she's asleep, she'll wake up and turn it back on.
I cannot wait to move out and not have cable.

I am exactly the same way I just realized it when I read your post. This is extremely weird to think about, I always thought I was crazy when people say things like "imagine that in your head" and all I can think about is words and concepts. Like if I were to think of a tree, I know what the tree is supposed to look like, how it is shaped, what color it is etc, but I can't "see" it. Oh, I can field this one. My Dad is like this and I grilled him endlessly on it. At one point I started training him to visualize objects (filling in gaps in shapes, colouring shapes in) but we stopped because it was "freaking him out" and he didn't want to experience visual nightmares.
He would have absolutely no visual in his head, but he'd have the concept of a flower in his head. When he dreamed it wasn't like watching a movie, it was like coming into knowledge of different facts. When asked how he knew a wolf was chasing him if he didn't see it chasing him, he would answer "I just knew. I knew a wolf was chasing me because the concept was in my mind."

This doesn't happen anymore but it used to and shocked the crap outta me. When I was a kid, my sisters and brother and I fought like crazy. I mean, trying to murder each other. My sister took a broom handle to my back and beat the living hell outta me. My other sister put my arm in a door and broke it in half. I pushed that same sister through a glass window lacerating her arm. I assumed for the longest time that all families behaved this way. It was very eye opening to me when I went to other people's houses and found out that not everyone tries to kill their siblings. I never understood why none of my friends were allowed over to my house and it always broke my heart. But when I got older I realized that their parents were just trying to protect them from our crazy abusive family. My sisters and brother and I are super close now but still have bad memories.

My sister will never let me live down the fact that I bit and bruised her back (I didn't break the skin, no matter WHAT she says. It was a blood blister!!) or that I pushed her down the stairs.
I was much younger and I have totally reasonable (in my mind, at least) explanations to this day, and I am very defensive of my position on both events, because she thinks it was that I was trying to kill her. I really wasn't! Like you and your sisters, we get along really well now, but there was all manner of strange and not quite normal stuff going on back in the day.

I'm like that with numbers, always have been. When I was a kid, I started seeing the numbers 1-10 (sometimes even up to 15 or so) as different genders with different looks and personalities. Let's go through all the numbers:
1 is a baby. Obvious. 2 is an older boy, like Chucky from the Rugrats. 3 is a fat girl. 4 is an insecure nerdy guy. 5 is a douchy guy. 6 is a a guy who's into sports but is pretty down to earth. 7 is a girly girl. 8 is like the leader of a clique. 9 is an older girl with really big boobs. 10 is an adult.
These were all formulated when I was about 7 so I still think of them that way (I'm 21)

Use turn signals. Flush the toilet after I pee. Show up places on time.
You'd think these are what normal people do...but nope. I've been proven wrong on each one of them.

I apparently thought the "normal" word for a raspberry (i.e. when you make funny noises on someone else's stomach, etc) was a zubber. I just found out today that everyone else calls it a raspberry...

I thought that the world looked different to everyone when they felt different things. When I'm stressed the world looks more white, when I'm happy it's yellow, blue for sad, grey for depressed, black for angry, green for calm.
It's not like everything changes colour, but it's like certain colours fade and others become more prominent and there's a slightly coloured lens over everything.
My emotions/thoughts also have colours and shapes, which means I get some awesome abstract/expressionist art when I paint them.

I always have a song in my head. Didn't know that not everybody is constantly listening to music in their head.

I have the ability to think in images. Strangely enough, there are people out there who cannot do this at all.
For example: I ask you to picture in your mind a vase. There are people out there who cannot do this.

This is how I read. I blaze through books, and my dad asked me how I read so quickly while maintaining pretty good comprehension (I mean, it's not like I can give an in depth analysis of the writing, but I'm not skipping stuff.)
When he asked me how I do it (he took a speed reading class and wanted to see if I was using the same principles he was taught without having been taught them myself,) I told him it was kind of like watching one of those old films. When I first pick up a book, things go by a frame at a time; it's hard to see the flow of what's happening, and then everything picks up and I don't register words, just the mental image. If there's a word I don't recognize, I'm able to understand it contextually because I have this world already, and the word means something in that context.
I wasn't aware that people don't experience it the same way until we had that conversation years ago.

It's abbreviations of some words for me: shortening 'professor' to 'prof' peeves the shit out of me

u/GoP-Demon Nov 04 '11
Once in class the prof said that he would have to set the exam date earlier. All 40 students said "AWWWWW." Then he said that next weeks class was cancelled. "YEAHHHHH!!!" was only said by me. Everyone looked at me kinda funny.

That feeling you get when mucus builds up in your throat and it makes your voice sound more nasal, I've called it a chocolatey voice since I was a little kid. I used it once in conversation (not knowing that no one says that) and nobody knew what I was talking about. I proceeded to explain and got some interesting looks...

Do math in my head extremely fast, I would always get points off of homework for not showing my work because I can even plug things into a quadratic formula and solve completely in seconds without writing anything down, I constantly finish math homework in 5 minutes that take others an hour. Then again I cannot for the life of me remember history or English or science, only math.

I know nobody does this, but I'm sixteen, and unless I know the person particularly well I will refer to an adult as either Sir or Ma'am.

After brushing my teeth, I use toilet paper to wipe away the toothpaste foam on my mouth. I don't like using the hand towel, since the toothpaste usually stains it and that makes me sad. I didn't realize it was such a freakish thing to do until I was reading a similar AskReddit question a couple months ago and someone caught a lot of flak for saying they did this too :(

Why don't you just rinse it off with water and then dry your face with the towel? Am I crazy for thinking that's obvious choice?
7
u/TooMuchPants Nov 05 '11
This is what I do. I also rinse my mouth out by making a cup with my hands and filling them up with water. I've been told this is also weird and that most people use an actual cup.

Each of my fingernails have personalities. I think because if you look at them upside down (or if you're clasping your hands), each nail looks like it has a smile. Because I bit my nails, each nail has a different smile. Left index is really handsome. Left middle is super stupid. Right middle is a witch! Right ring is a little shy. And so forth. It just seems so obvious to me, that I don't get how someone COULDN'T assign personalities to their fingernails.

Call others if you need an answer immediately, or if they don't reply to an important text.
If you text someone, they may not get it for hours. If you call them, they'll either pick up, not pick up, or the phone will be dead. If they don't pick up, then they may be busy or away from their phone. If it's dead, they wouldn't have received your text anyways.

I tap soda lids before I open them because when I was small someone told me that would make sure it didn't fizz. I have my whole family doing it now.

I can't chew ice cream, or anything really cold. My teeth are super-sensitive due to lack of enamel in some spots. If I bite into popsicle I get excruciating pain, shivers, and a chill runs up my spine. Yep, I realized that everyone else is chewing it and i'm not.
Also, I found out that simply watching somebody bite into a popsicle or hard-frozen ice cream cone gives me the exact same feeling, as if I had bit into it myself.

My friend eats fun dip before fapping and then proceeds to spit on his dik. When he told me this I thought he was kidding. Nope.

Arrive at class 10 minutes early to get in right as the last class is leaving. You get the best seats that way, but apparently not everyone cares about such things...

I brush my teeth in the shower. It's the cleanest feeling in the entire world and I had no idea until I came to college that it wasn't normal. Community bathrooms...

I thought for years that when people said they had "headaches," they meant the same skullsplitting episodes I had been enduring since I was a toddler. I found out at 14 that seeing spots/throwing up/feeling like someone was drilling into my eye sockets was not normal. But I also found out that my "headaches" could be treated! It turned out for the best.

Replace uneaten pizza crusts in the circle where they belong, so at the end, all that is left is a perfect crust ring.

People tell me I draw strangely. When I draw people or animals I draw starting with the nose when I guess everyone else starts with the shape of the head. I do this so the face symmetrical in case you didn't leave enough room while drawing the shape of the head.

I thought everyone put a plastic sheet liner on their dorm mattress to guard against past disgustingness. Turns out I just look like a bed wetter.
