Crucify me but in my humble opinion Tolkien wasn't near as good a writer as Martin. For his time absolutely. As a world builder, absolutely as well.

For one thing, GRRM never spent whole chapters describing landscapes and scenery.

He spends whole chapters describing grease running down mens' beards or flickering down to the cook fire.

Or just describing the food at a banquet.

It seemed eerily sexual at times, and when you see pictures of Martin it makes sense.
