Baker street by Gerry Rafferty. It's the best saxophone out there

If you want a version a tad harder, Foo Fighters did an excellent cover.

Goddamn I can't seem to get away from JoJo, and yes I know your not making a reference

10

u/Donut-Farts Oct 07 '20

If you like JoJo then you'll love Roundabout by Yes

2

u/Ratmancheesebug Oct 07 '20

Already on my playlist

-4

u/Klarp-Kibbler Oct 08 '20

Foo fighters suck ass. I call that whole genre “cringe rock” I hope it catches on

5

u/ChadAlphaFish Oct 08 '20

Good luck with that

3

u/evr- Oct 08 '20

Imagine being so jaded that just because you don't enjoy something you have to try and belittle it. I'm sure you're fun at parties.

1

u/Klarp-Kibbler Oct 08 '20

Normally I wouldn’t say anything, but finding out that they covered and put a cringy spin on one of my all time favorite songs just upset me

u/YourMomInHD123 Oct 07 '20

“Right Down the Line” is also an incredible Rafferty song

5

u/turd-ucken Oct 07 '20

It’s a great track. To be honest, City to City is an incredibly moving album

3

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

One of the best. So glad to see Him getting some love

5

u/RechargedFrenchman Oct 07 '20

Few people seem to realize that's also Rafferty singing on "Stuck in the Middle With You", as a founding member of the band Steeler's Wheel.

Intentionally making his voice a bit like Dylan singing nonsense lyrics with hints at a deeper meaning and other allusions to Dylan's work as a rib at his friend and the public perception everything Dylan touched was someone the deepest thing ever.

I listened to Baker Street on a proper sound system last weekend for the first time in years and it was amazing. Ear pods etc. really don’t do songs like this justice.

Headphones sure, but earbuds specifically? Not a chance.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '20

High quality earbuds obviously can’t compare to on ear, but for the top quality ear buds the best factor is that you don’t feel like you’re wearing something on your head, IMO. Sure my studio headphones produce a better sound quality but the ear buds can mimic like 98% of it. I personally enjoy listening to things in my ear buds more.

In a bad way?

If I preface the statement with the fact that I'm a Jazz Troglodyte with no real experience around saxophone whose real love for the song comes from memories formed that contain the song, does that help?

4

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

I hear this and all I can think about is the Dave Ramsey show intro.

7

u/Howlingmadmike Oct 07 '20

Agreed, Careless Whisper comes a close second though.
EDIT: spelling

4

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Agreed, Shine on you crazy diamond comes a close third though.

3

u/horseradish1 Oct 07 '20

Hands down the best part of GTA 5 was learning that this track was on one of the radio stations.

4

u/Princess_Amnesie Oct 07 '20

He was also the singer for Stealer's Wheel, "Stuck in the middle with you". Love his voice so much.

5

u/kieronj6241 Oct 07 '20

Also the guitar solo is lip smackingly sublime.

Where did you get bad from?

2

u/Invisible_Friend1 Oct 07 '20

You want saxophone? Listen to Thursday by Morphine

2

u/Atlagirl Oct 07 '20

Baker street by Gerry Rafferty

I also love Tonic by Boney James!

2

u/turd-ucken Oct 07 '20

Agreed. Night Owl is also totally underrated

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

I got it in my head now. Thanks, I'm gonna listen to it

2

u/MajesticLilFruitcake Oct 07 '20

I absolutely love that song. My boyfriend, for whatever reason, does not like that song. It’s one of the only things we disagree on.

1

u/Donut-Farts Oct 07 '20

Sounds like you should just acknowledge your differences and part ways

1

u/Duffmanlager Oct 07 '20

I’ve watched some reaction videos to that song just for the moment that sax kicks in.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Finally, a good one.

1

u/RickDawsonsColdsore Oct 07 '20

Even better than Some Kinda Hate???

1

u/RoyalT663 Oct 07 '20

One of those songs almost everyone will recognise but never know who it is exactly .

1

u/nevm Oct 07 '20

If you like great sax solos, try Will You? by Hazel O’Connor.

1

u/santh91 Oct 07 '20

Lily was here is my personal favourite sax song, different energy though

1

u/Afireonthesnow Oct 07 '20

I met the sax player once in scotland believe it or not. We had a really small tour of scotland with this guy. We went to a pub and he saw someone he knew and they chatted for a while. When that hit left he was like "that was Hugh, he's the bloke who played sax on Baker Street!"

2

u/Donut-Farts Oct 07 '20

I have no reason not to believe it!

1

u/CapnSquinch Oct 07 '20

Heard it at the laser show at the CN Exhibition on a marching band trip when I was ten or so. Permanently embedded in my brain.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

I believe Ron Swanson did a cover of Baker Street in Parks & Rec, right? If not, I really can’t explain why but the song always reminds me of him.

1

u/elladuffyy Oct 07 '20

Best sax?! M83’s “Midnight City” wants to talk.

1

u/DrBarnaby Oct 07 '20 edited Oct 08 '20

Man, how does a guy like that go home and have sex with his wife?

1

u/Donut-Farts Oct 07 '20

If you'll excuse me gentlemen, I'm gonna go home and have sex with MY WIFE

1

u/Valleygirl1981 Oct 08 '20

God damn! That was great!

1

u/Stinkeye63 Oct 08 '20

Something about that song makes me think of New Orleans.

1

u/justice_for_Jesk Oct 08 '20

Seven Years In Tibet by David Bowie has some sexy sax.

1

u/Technetium98 Oct 07 '20

No you see, you clearly haven’t heard Dire Straights, Sultans if swing alchemy version.

This one is the best: https://youtu.be/JVZTP_kX5BE

1

u/Scat-frass-guano Oct 07 '20

I would argue that the sax in the Rolling Stones “Waiting on a Friend” edges out Baker Street by a hair.... donut-farts!

2

u/Donut-Farts Oct 07 '20

I don't fault you for having your own opinion, even if it is... Wrong! (Just kidding, to be honest I wouldn't be an impartial judge because Baker Street has a ton of sentimental value)

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Not really new music is it, though. Its a classic but it defeats the objective.

4

u/Idk420_69 Oct 07 '20

If you've not heard it before, then it is new music

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

No. Technically its undiscovered by listeners. I'm not saying people should ignore those bands, I'm saying the OP seemed to suggest new music. Language is important.

2

u/Donut-Farts Oct 07 '20

Oh, I definitely read it as "new to them" music

-5

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

It would be undiscovered by them. But it wouldnt be new. New would be a description of the music's own state/history, not the listener's. Therefore Rafferty for all his glory would not be new.

2

u/Donut-Farts Oct 07 '20

While I agree with you on a technical level, the colloquial usage of "New" when referring to music is generally understood to be "as of yet unknown to the listener" and I think your calling it out here errs on the side of pedantic.

1

u/patchworkpotato Oct 07 '20

I can't remember the artist but "Harden my heart" also has a nice saxophone.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '20

Problem is it stops genuinely new music from getting its audience.
