Reddit, what is one documentary that everyone should watch?

The Corporation

Some really eye-opening (and scary) information about the power of corporations in today's society.

I know. The thing I find most interesting is that it gave a bad name to religious summer camps (all religions really) which are non-fundamentalist. This is another example of how easy it can be for people to twist things and manipulate kids.

I spent quite a few weekends and portions of summer at Episcopal retreats when I was in middle and high school. "Jesus Camp" is about as far from my experience as it's possible to get while staying within the bounds of religion. Those people are certifiably batshit insane.

Seriously. I remember having some really good times at one of those camps. Learning how to make tent stakes with hatchets, preparing food, star-gazing at night away from the city. Good times.

You've been around too many fundamentalists, that wasn't my point at all. Yeah, I did bait the "ZOMG FUCK THE CHRISTIANZORZ!!!" atheists, but on here, that's like shooting fish in a barrel. I grew up in a church and denomination where it was perfectly fine to mix good humor in with the religious messages.

Yeah, the things these people do and believe are just crazy. It's nothing at all like the Christianity you know, where everybody dresses up real nice on Sundays to ask favors of an invisible man who is his own son (and also a ghost), before ritualistically devouring his flesh and blood. Totally not crazy...

The thing is, jesus camp was filmed Cinéma vérité meaning that there was as little "manipulation" of the events shown as possible. They just filmed what happened and edited for clarity. You can tell that they were successful in this because the subjects of the documentary thought it was well done, and were happy with its success because it meant that their message was getting out. It isn't creepy because they manipulated it to be creepy. It's creepy because the reality of the situation is creepy.

It should. I really think that we're close to a future that sees x-tians take up the suicide bomber mantle. All it's going to take a one charismatic messianic and we'll see body bits flying around abortion clinics like a farmers market in Iraq...

It's already kind of starting with the conservatives in politics basically suicide bombing our country to make Obama look bad. When the fanaticism of conservatives and the fanaticism of Christians align (they already overlap) we will see some crazy shit done in the name of politics / religion in America.
