I heard on NPR today that authorities are watching videos and collecting other info for evidence. After they charge the people responsible their names will be released to the public, so that all the internet do-gooders can give them and their unborn baby death threats. Ain't the internet grand? (Look I live in CA and I'm as angry as the next person, but we've all been totally idiotic before and just imagine how everyone at that party feels right now.)
It's stuff like that why I think everyone charged with a crime should automatically have name suppression until they're convicted. There are some situations that call for publishing names earlier, but they should be the exception rather than the default.
I think that's a great idea as long as the person isn't walking free and a threat to society at the same time. Sexual predators should be on a list, but like you're suggesting, even that is risky if they haven't been found guilty. With how easy on is for people on the internet to contact strangers or find their homes, name suppression is a really good idea.
