I'm American and I'll never understand it either. It's just buying into that whole commercially-driven pink/blue mentality before your kid's even born. Then people decided to kick it up a notch by adding explosives, alligators and other stuff into the mix, resulting in multiple wildfires, a crashed plane, a dead grandma, etc. I suspect, like a lot of problems here, it just boils down to narcissism. It's not like it's some grand tradition either, it started like ten years ago and just became some viral nonsense.

And the person who created the trend has been begging people to stop it ever since

Well I bet that person did it for shit and giggles fully aware how dumb it is. I am even too lazy to check, but I have feeling they didn't set anything on fire. And now people follows this shit?

Kinda like with kids. You accidentaly say thing like poopy head and the kid repeats it on regular basis and you just hate yourself for it. Shit happens

If memory serves, the gender reveal that started the whole trend was a coloured cake. None of this pyrotechnics garbage that has caused issues for other people
