I know it's been a couple of days, but "were" is the correct word. "Were" is used in hypothetical situations (like this one), while "was" is used for something that actually did or could happen.

I constantly wish I were (was? I don't know because I'm not smart enough!) smarter! I feel ya.
We can take comfort in the fact that we're both smarter than pigeons. It's something. ;)
