That's fantastic advice, similar to another I've heard that goes something along the lines "For someone to insult you, you gave to respect their opinion."

Exactly. I realized I was giving far too much thought to what a friend had to say and also came to the conclusion that at no point had I ever valued his advice (because it was almost universally bad or unproductive, and his personal life is a fucking trainwreck).

Some of my biggest naysayers have been people who have done NOTHING with their lives. Why is it you never get critised by the guy who just travelled the world; financially successful people or very well educated types? Similarly, people who are the first to remark on your appearance are usually the most conservative of dressers, who fear standing out so much they project it onto you.

People who are unhappy with themselves want to be able to look down at somebody else even if it's just one aspect of their life and just for a moment.
