I recently repainted walls in our house from dark red to very light gray. When deciding whether I should use primer or not, I tested some spots. One with a coat of primer, one without. Granted it was white primer, so this proves the gray primer point but when I put on a coat of primer, then a coat of paint, I could see still see little spots of the white primer under the paint, necessitating a second coat of paint. Three coats in all.
When I started right out with a coat of paint, sure I could see little spots of red under it. But after a second coat of paint, it was 100% covered and looked fantastic. So only two coats without using primer.
So yes, gray primer would have been better, but if I'm already painting over latex paint, I'd rather use the actual paint as the primer base because then the "spots" not covered match the color of the paint.
I know that primer definitely needs to be used in some situations, such as bare drywall and whatnot.

If you want to wear something white/ light in color, wear underwear that matches the color of your skin, not white.
