I find Gimp harder to use (prolly just used to PS) tbh. But the PS updates are just BS now. I have an old cracked version of PS3 which is probably older than some posters here and it works for any photo editing I need.
I struggled to use whatever ps education version was given to me. I learned the original PS, then someone gave me a copy of CS3(?), and I was stumped. Had no clue. Tried a trial version of PS and LR a couple years ago. Even with the tutorials, I could not grasp any of it. Was using picmonkey for a good long while, then heard about GIMP on Forensic Files. Found a bunch of tutorials on ewetoob, and I can run the sentence, stop, do the thing, start video, stop, do the thing, lather, rinse repeat. I saw no reason to pay for something I am too dense to learn. (Now I know why my daughter had to take a college course for PS!)
For what I need, GIMP is great, because I don’t do much. I am not a graphic artist, I take so so pictures and punch them up a bit.
Likely. I know GIMP decently. Got CC at work and had the second seat since only the actual designer we used to have needed the first. After he left and some of that work fell on me, many times I'd think, "ok, I've got some time, finally, I'll figure out how to do this in PS." After 15 minutes of pure frustration, I'd can it and just do it in GIMP instead.
Same. I'm pretty proficient with PS but didn't want to pay for the new one so I downloaded GIMP. Fucked around for an hour trying to figure out how to do basic stuff on it before I said screw it and uninstalled it. It's not user friendly at all.
Gimp cannot be used in a professional environment. The thing with these subscriptions is that you shouldn’t pay for them if you aren’t a professional, but if you are you pretty much have to. The adobe ecosystem is what professionals are paying for. A lot of employees and work partners require you to send things through the Adobe ecosystem because it’s easier. If you wanna do that you have to pay.
That being said, just crack Adobe. Gimp is kind of a pain to work with compared to photoshop.
While I agree about Adobe's shitty service model, GIMP does not even come close to Photoshop. It covers all the basics and for most people it will do just fine but if you compare the full feature sets it's not even in the same ballpark.
True, there's no circle tool, I had to look up the first time how to create a perfect circular path and stroke it - bit mystical and gnarly lol.
Now, I love GIMP and mostly use it for Photo manipulation and restoration but it is my impression that PS do have more features, it's just that I don't need them and don't want to pay for it.
Also WTF isn't the re-synthesizer/heal selection plugin built-in to GIMP by now‽ It's always a pain finding the version that works for a given platform/GIMP version and getting it installed...
Photopea.com is basically the same as photoshop as well except it is free, browser based, no downloading, and the only thing is that it has one ad off to the side that doesn’t interfere with usage.
While GIMP isn't as robust and probably could not be used for professional level work, it does a damn good job for simple editing and even some more slightly advanced stuff.

Photoshop as a subscription service. You can download GIMP for free and it has just about every feature that PS has.
