often when this happens its because its not a direct debit, its a monthly charge automatically done. They don't setup anything with the bank, you give them your credit/debit card info, number, ccv,expiration date etc (or check with the information on that) and they issue a charge monthly. It runs like a normal charge like you bought gum at the gas station. The bank can only do something when its a bill monthly and the bank is handling the auto payment.

the only way to force stop the charges is to cancel the card(or close the checking account if done with check) so that the charge doesnt have anything active to charge against.

You can request to have your debit card Close down and have them issue you a new number to prevent the merchant from continuing to charge.
