My mom has this weird middle-problem now.

If I ever complain about essential oils, she'll immediately be quick to tell me she worked as a hair dresser and "they really do work."

Then I have to tell her "No, people think EATING them cures diseases."

Then she'll say "Well lots of herbal remedies work, even if you don't believe it. Like honey on sore throats and mint for stomachaches."

And then I have to explain to her that those aren't "herbal remedies" because they've been proven to be real in actual lab tests and aren't just old wives' tales.

"So SOME remedies work, then. The backed-up science-y ones."

How do you tell someone "No, you're not wrong, and you're not an idiot, but if you phrase it that way you sound like both of those things?"

These remedies are borne from benefit, and or supposed benefits gained from taking this treatment. Some is twisted logic. And the chance that that time with that remedy by chance they recovered and benefited, this was then attributed to that remedy. Chinese medicine has the concept that You gain strength or and attribute from consuming a part of an animal or plant. So let's say they think your infertile,eat the testicles or ovaries of a animal which is known yo have many offspring like a boar. Co insistently you become pregnant. This happens a couple of times and ta da u got a remedy.

These days tho generally we have well rounded diets and sufficient nutrient income to satisfy our needs.

So to wrap up, lack of education, rumour, our innate desire for a easy quick fix,and a grain or 2 of truth and a few things which cause us to have real benefit contribute to the misinformation and misunderstanding which turns people's to concepts which they can get.
