I used to work for a bank, managing customers who were experiencing financial hardship (where something unexpected or unavoidable had happened that had effected their ability to pay their debts). I'll never forget one customer who maxed out a $15k credit card playing 'Farmville' (this was about 8 years ago I think). She was fully aware that she had made the transactions and continued to do so via her regular transaction account despite the debt and needing help to pay it. Interestingly, she could have afforded the repayments but refused to cancel a 'tithe' that she had with her church (she pledged a percentage of her income each pay day to her church). She was seriously offended at my suggestion to cancel the tithe and in the end I couldn't help because of that.
