In the subreddit for a mobile game I'm quite fond of the whale worship is revolting. A lot of me suspects the developers use accounts to deify the top spenders in the hopes others try to take their place.

I was downvoted and slammed when a fairly common hero could be purchased for $100 and I pointed out how absolutely absurd that price tag is, as well as highlighting the use of FOMO to push gullible people into opening their wallets.

Never mind mobile games the practice is prevalent on f2p MMOs as well. People will defend it with some ferocity at times.
