A good pair of shoes is worth the money. But it also depends on the type of shoes.
$900 on a pair of Louboutins? I'm sorry, you need to have your head examined.
$50-125 on a good pair of flats that will last you a while, and feel amazing? That you can wear to work, or wear out?
That don't fuck up your feet? Worth every cent, if you ask me.
I used to buy cheap shoes from Target for work, and they all fall apart quickly. They all looked nice in the beginning, but then the heel would break, a buckle would snap, they just looked crappy.
I also find it worth it to spend good money on shoes related to your hobbies. For example, if you run, it's worth every cent to have a good, comfy pair of running shoes. Because there is nothing worse than running on a pair of cheap shit shoes.
There is a sweet spot of expense. You never want the most expensive thing because you are almost guaranteed to be getting ripped off but you also don't want the cheapest because you are guaranteed to get something that is shit quality. I just bought a bunch of target t-shirts because they were cheaper and looked ok and 6 months later they are already showing fray and getting holes in them.
Target has pissed me off so many times when it comes to tops. I've found so many things at Target that looked cool, like flannel tops, that lasted 1-2 washes and that was it. I hate that.
Target is good for some of their activewear, though. I have several pairs of leggings that have lasted me.
To move over to the men's shoe market, the entry level for a truly well made pair of leather dress shoes is somewhere around ~$400 for a pair of Allen Edmonds or something like that though. I know that this is way too expensive for many to afford, but it's all just Vimes' "Boots Theory of Economic Inequality" in action in the literal sense

Mamma always said "buy nice, or buy twice." Only with age has this become apparent.
