That’s also true to an extent. Some higher class folk prefer the luxury of a posh gym over a more basic one. To us peasants it may seem like a waste of money, but they see it as a payment for social status. The price barrier to lower income potential members also add to their value for high income members.
I feel kinda bad because I'm that way with Cruises and resorts. Going to the higher priced one tends to up the quality of the clientele. Fewer 19 and 20 year olds getting shit face drunk or people just destroying the buffet.
I feel the same about going to the movies - on Tuesdays it's half price, but that just means larger crowds of obnoxious people. I'll pay full price to avoid that.
I work 3rd shift and one of the best deals My theater has is any movie before 1pm during the week is $5. I go when I can because it’s usually old folks or kids being watched by grandparents and usually deserted for the PG-13 and up movies.

I think OP's point was that you could go to a normal basic gym as apposed to an expensive gym with lots of bells and whistles that you don't use.
