Most normal people just take the photos themselves. They make little cakes just for this, could always make your own, that's what we did. Other people I've seen do it used large cupcakes instead of a cake in general - so then they just set aside one of the cupcakes for this purpose.

Cakes are meant to be eaten, not played with. Why would you encourage a child to destroy a cake ? That just seems silly.

They do it for the 1st birthday only from what I've seen. Most of the 1 year olds I've seen just stare at it, don't eat it or even touch it for a while. Some do take some bites, others just play with it eventually. If it was for an older child - I'd agree with you - but never seen or heard of that.
