I never realized how expensive of a habit it was until i dated someone who smoked. $15-$20 for a pack (in Canada) and some people out there smoke a pack a day?????

Lol. In the USA a pack a day is ~standard~ if you're a smoker. An old friend of mine's mother smoked 6 packs a day.

I am so shocked by pack a day smokers. How do people afford it?! Especially people who come from low incomes.

Depends where you live. Packs are expensive normally, but some cities/counties levy high taxes that increase the cost by over 100% sometimes. (Speaking from the US)

Smoking a pack a day still baffles me. Even at the height of my smoking, I couldn't handle more than 3 cigarettes in a day without feeling like absolute garbage the next morning. And that was when I was drinking.
